The Four Shrines of Uttarakhand

Gangotri Temple
The Gangotri Temple is located in the Uttarkashi district and is situated at a height of 3,415 meters. Among the four temples, Gangotri holds a special position as it is the origin of one of the most important rivers in our country, the Ganga. It is, therefore evident that the Gangotri temple devoted itself to the Goddess Ganga. According to Hindu mythology, Gangotri is the place where the river Ganga descended from heaven when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from his luscious locks.

Yamunotri Temple
The Yamunotri Temple is located in the Uttarkashi district and is situated at a height of 3,293 meters. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. A bath in the sanctified waters of Yamuna is said to cleanse all sins and protect from an untimely or painful death. Such strong associations in Hindu mythology place Yamuna Devi in high ranks of divinity. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Yama Dwitiya for the winter.

Badrinath Temple
The Badrinath Temple is located in the Chamoli district and is situated at a height of 3,300 meters. Situated between the mighty Nar and Narayan peaks, the Badrinath Temple dedicates itself to Lord Vishnu. According to a Hindu Legend, the God Vishnu sat in meditation at this place. During his meditation, Vishnu was unaware of cold weather. Lakshmi, his consort, protected him in the form of the Badri tree (jujube or Indian date). Pleased by the devotion of Lakshmi, Vishnu named the place Badrika Ashram.

Kedarnath Temple
The Kedarnath Temple is located in the Rudraprayag district and is situated at a height of 3,583 meters. It is also one of the significant temples of the sacred Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, raising the glory of the place to further heights. This temple dedicates itself to Lord Shiva. According to a theological account, the god Shiva agreed to dwell here at the request of Nara-Narayana. After the Kurukshetra War, the Pandava brothers, came here to meet Shiva on the advice of the sage Vyasa, because they wanted to seek forgiveness for killing their kin during the war. However, Shiva did not want to forgive them: so, he turned into a bull and hid among the cattle on the hill. When the Pandavas managed to track him, he tried to disappear by sinking himself head-first into the ground. One of the brothers grabbed his tail, forcing him to appear before them and forgive them. The Pandavas brothers then built the first temple at Kedarnath.
